Minnie Cooper and John McClendon in Faulkner’s “Dry September” | Interminable Rambling
By organising a lynch mob, McLendon fulkner taking the law into his own hands and dispensing what he considers to be justice killing Will Mayes. Unwilling to witness the actual murder, Hawkshaw jumps out of the speeding car. We also know there are like a bajillion books out there that I want to read.

The Wishing Tree It is also at the beginning of the story that Faulkner explores the theme of gossip and rumour. Margaret Rose Vendryes comments on the framing of the image: Hawkshaw, the barber, stubbornly refuses to believe that Will Mayes has attacked Miss Cooper.
It is through this concept that the story develops, Faulkner highlighting to the reader the willingness of the men of Jefferson, particularly John McLendon, to believe Minnie Cooper and form a lynch mob to kill Will Mayes. Of all the men, he appears to be the one who is prepared to give Will Mayes the benefit of the doubt.

When he realizes that he can only watch, not stop them, Hawkshaw begins to retch and asks McLendon to let him out of the car, but the car does not slow down. The triangle of drh men, in their freedom, are the ones drj be feared.

It really helped me out. It not only can be seen as a symbol of violence but it can be seen to represent violence in the past, present possibly and future.
